Girl’s Night Out: Bowl Season & Brunch Plans

Girl’s Night Out: Bowl Season & Brunch Plans

There is something about New Year’s Day college football that feels different from every other game day. The stakes are higher, the settings feel bigger, and the energy is equal parts celebration and tradition. Bowl season stretches the holidays just a little longer, giving us one more reason to gather, order another round of mimosas, and let the games carry us into the new year.

For Girl’s Night Out, this weekend is the perfect blend of football, travel, and ritual. It is not just about the matchups, it is about where you watch, who you are with, and how you kick off the year ahead. Before we get to the iconic bowls that anchor New Year’s Day, the playoff games leading into them set the tone, and this year’s storylines feel especially good.

I will be locked in Friday night for what should feel like a true pick’em game, with Oklahoma and Alabama squaring off for a trip to Pasadena. The winner gets Indiana, this season’s Cinderella story, led by Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza. After writing about Mendoza’s journey and the role his family, especially his mom, played along the way, I am all in on the Hoosiers. College football is better when a great story meets a great stage.

From there, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day deliver four iconic bowls, four cities, and four very different vibes. If you are traveling, hosting, or planning a Girl’s Night Out watch party, here is how each one sets up.

Cotton Bowl: Big Stage Energy and Texas Swagger

New Year’s Eve, 7:30 pm ET, ESPN

The Cotton Bowl does not do subtle, and neither does Texas. AT&T Stadium sets the stage for a loud, high energy New Year’s Eve quarterfinal featuring Ohio State, with their opponent to be decided earlier in the weekend. Everything about this game feels big, from the brands to the expectations.

From a GNO perspective, this is the bowl for those who want football to be the centerpiece of their New Year’s Eve plans. Think late afternoon party, champagne before kickoff, and leaning fully into Texas style. Cowgirl hats welcome. The Cotton Bowl does not ask you to slow down, it dares you to keep up.

Orange Bowl: Miami Heat and a Midday Rally

New Year’s Day, 12 pm ET

The Orange Bowl kicks off the new year at noon in Miami Gardens, which feels intentional. Even if New Year’s Eve runs a little late, Miami has a way of pulling everyone back into celebration mode. This game brings Big 12 Champion Texas Tech to one of the most vibrant football environments in the country.

From a Girl’s Night Out angle, this one feels like a vacation disguised as a football game. Miami is loud, colorful, and built for daytime energy. This is the bowl where someone inevitably says “just one more,” and means both the drink and the game. Pace yourself, there is still plenty of football left.

Rose Bowl: Sunshine, Tradition, and a Story That Hits

New Year’s Day, mid afternoon

There is no setting in college football more romantic than the Rose Bowl, and this year’s matchup fits the moment perfectly. Pasadena welcomes Indiana and Fernando Mendoza, a pairing that feels refreshing in a sport often dominated by the same logos and legacies.

New Year’s Day in Pasadena is its own experience. Sunshine, palm trees, a historic stadium, and a parade full of roses. It is brunch culture meets college football tradition. Whether you have tickets or are watching from afar, this is peak West Coast energy, linen blazers encouraged and mimosas flowing well past kickoff.

Sugar Bowl: New Orleans Soul and Playoff Power

New Year’s Day, 8 pm ET

If Pasadena is storybook and Miami is playful, New Orleans is soulful. The Sugar Bowl caps the quarterfinals with SEC power, as Georgia awaits the winner of Ole Miss and Tulane. No matter how that matchup plays out, Georgia feels like the team to beat here.

New Orleans on New Year’s Day is unmatched. Live music, great food, and a city that knows how to host a celebration. This is the bowl for those still standing after a full day of football, where the night ends with something fried, something frozen, and one last toast.

Whether you are traveling to one of these cities, hosting friends at home, or bouncing between brunch and the couch, this weekend is about more than just the games. It is about how we watch them and who we watch them with. Girl’s Night Out starts the year with good energy, good company, and college football at its best.

Mimosas up. Cheers to a new year and a bowl season worth savoring.
